Open Data Day 2021 (Africa) – Kenya

The Open Data Day, run by the Open Knowledge Foundation, is an annual celebration of open data all over the world which provides an opportunity to show the benefits of open data and encourage the adoption of open data policies in government, business and civil society. This year, the Open Institute will convene an event to discuss how decisions regarding the access and use of data in Kenya are made.

Bitange Ndemo
Associate Professor
Prof. Bitange Ndemo is an ICT specialist and an Associate professor in Entrepreneurship.  He also teaches Research Methods and Management at the School of Business, University of Nairobi. Prior to this, he was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT where he initiated various transformative projects, including development of the undersea cables into East Africa and the development of the Kenya Open Data Initiative.
Immaculate Kassait
Data Protection Commissioner
Ms. Kassait is an advocate of the high court of Kenya. She holds a Global Executive Masters of Business Administration from United States International University, Post Graduate Diploma in Law KSL, LLB (Honours) from Makerere University.
Irungu Houghton
Executive Director
Irungu Houghton serves as Executive Director for Amnesty International Kenya. As Amnesty’s spokesperson and chief strategist in Kenya, I lead a team of committed investigative researchers and campaigners working to end human rights abuses and realize the rights and freedoms captured in the Constitution of Kenya.
Shikoh Gitau

Shikoh, has 10+ years of experience in ICT4D technology design & implementation. She has established expertise in both African and Emerging Markets specialized interest in issues pertaining to in resource poor communities and marginalized groups including women, youth and children.
Mugambi Laibuta
Partner
Mugambi advises private, public, intergovernmental, international, regional, civil society and academic institutions to ensure they comply with internationally recognized data protection principles.
Muchiri Nyaggah
Executive Director
Muchiri serves as the Executive Director at the Local Development Research Institute. He previously served as the Deputy Executive Director and Policy Lead at the Open Institute and worked on open data and open government projects at national and sub-national level.
